Pressure Altitude Calculator

Pressure altitude is the altitude your aircraft feels in the standard atmosphere, and it is the starting point for nearly every performance calculation a pilot makes, from takeoff distance to true airspeed. It is found by adjusting the field elevation for the difference between the current altimeter setting and the standard sea level pressure of 29.92 inches of mercury or 1013.25 hectopascals. When the pressure is lower than standard the pressure altitude is higher than the field elevation, and vice versa. This calculator applies the widely taught approximation of about one thousand feet of pressure altitude change for each inch of mercury, or roughly twenty seven feet per hectopascal, added to the field elevation. Enter the field elevation and the altimeter setting in inches of mercury or hectopascals, and read the pressure altitude instantly. It feeds directly into density altitude work. All math runs locally in your browser for fast, private results.

How to use Pressure Altitude Calculator

  1. Enter the field elevation.
  2. Enter the altimeter setting.
  3. Read the pressure altitude.
  4. Feed the result into a density altitude calculation.

Frequently asked questions

How is pressure altitude computed?

It adjusts your field elevation by the difference between the standard altimeter setting of 29.92 inHg and your local setting, about 1000 feet per inch of mercury.

Why do pilots need pressure altitude?

Aircraft and engine performance charts are built on the standard atmosphere, so pressure altitude converts your real conditions to that reference for accurate planning.

What altimeter setting do I enter?

Enter the local altimeter setting reported by the airport, in inches of mercury or hectopascals, and the tool corrects your elevation to pressure altitude.

What is Pressure Altitude Calculator?

Pressure altitude is the altitude your aircraft feels in the standard atmosphere, and it is the starting point for nearly every performance calculation a pilot makes, from takeoff distance to true airspeed. It is found by adjusting the field elevation for the difference between the current altimeter setting and the standard sea level pressure of 29.

Is Pressure Altitude Calculator free to use?

Yes. Pressure Altitude Calculator is completely free, with no sign-up and no usage limits.

Does Pressure Altitude Calculator work in a web browser?

Yes. Pressure Altitude Calculator runs in any modern web browser. There is nothing to download or install.

Is my data private with Pressure Altitude Calculator?

Yes. Pressure Altitude Calculator runs entirely on your device in your browser, so nothing you enter is uploaded to a server.
