Density altitude is pressure altitude corrected for temperature, and it is the number that really matters for how an aircraft, a naturally aspirated engine or a wing will perform. On a hot day the thin, low density air behaves like a much higher altitude, robbing lift, thrust and power, which is the hidden cause behind many mountain and summer accidents. This calculator uses the standard field approximation that adds about one hundred twenty feet of density altitude for every degree Celsius the air is warmer than the standard temperature for that pressure altitude, where the standard lapse rate is roughly two degrees Celsius per one thousand feet from a fifteen degree Celsius sea level base. Enter the pressure altitude and the outside air temperature, choose Celsius or Fahrenheit, and read the density altitude with a short performance note. It is a quick preflight sanity check for hot and high conditions. All math runs locally in your browser for private answers.
