How do I calculate a tip on a restaurant bill?

Short answer

Multiply the bill by the tip rate as a decimal. On a 60 dollar bill, 15 percent is 9.00, 18 percent is 10.80, and 20 percent is 12.00. A free tip calculator does the math instantly in your browser and can also split the total across the table.

The mental math shortcut

Ten percent is just the decimal point moved one place: 10 percent of 60 dollars is 6 dollars. From there, 20 percent is double that (12 dollars) and 15 percent is the 10 percent figure plus half of it again (6 + 3 = 9 dollars). For awkward bill amounts the calculator is faster and avoids the rounding argument at the table.

Splitting the bill fairly

A tip and split calculator adds the tip and divides the total by the number of people in one step. For example, an 85 dollar bill with a 20 percent tip adds 17 dollars for a 102 dollar total, which split four ways is 25.50 each. Everything runs locally in your browser, so it works at the table even on a weak connection once the page is loaded.

Step by step

  1. Enter the bill amount. Type the bill total into the tip calculator.
  2. Pick a tip percentage. Choose 15, 18, 20 percent or a custom rate.
  3. Split if needed. Set the number of people to see the per-person share of the total.

Frequently asked questions

What is a 20 percent tip on 85 dollars?

17 dollars, bringing the total to 102 dollars. Split four ways that is 25.50 per person.

What is the quick way to figure a tip in my head?

Take 10 percent by moving the decimal point, then double it for 20 percent or add half of it for 15 percent.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Conventions vary. Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal; tipping on the full total is simply a little more generous. Either way the calculation is the same multiplication.
