How do I count characters for a tweet or X post?

Short answer

Use a free tweet character counter that tallies your characters live as you type in the browser and shows how close you are to the limit. It counts everything as you edit so you can trim a post to fit before you publish. It needs no account and nothing is uploaded.

Fit the post before you publish

X enforces a character limit, and links, mentions and emoji all count toward it in ways that are easy to lose track of. A live counter shows the running total as you type, so you can see exactly when you go over and edit the wording down instead of getting an error at post time.

Draft privately

The counting happens entirely in your browser, so your draft post stays on your device and is never sent to a server. You can paste in a draft, watch the count update on every keystroke, and rework it as many times as you like with no sign-up and no limit on how many posts you check.

Step by step

  1. Open the counter. Open the tweet character counter in your browser.
  2. Type or paste your post. Enter your draft and watch the character count update live.
  3. Trim to fit. Edit the text until the count sits within the limit, then copy it out.
