How do I calculate my GPA from my grades and credit hours?

Short answer

On the standard 4.0 scale, convert each letter grade to points (A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0), multiply each by the credits for that course, add them up, and divide by total credits. An A in a 3-credit class and a B in a 4-credit class is (12 + 12) / 7, a GPA of about 3.43. A free GPA calculator does the whole table in your browser.

Credits are the part people forget

GPA is not a plain average of your grades. A 4-credit class moves your GPA more than a 1-credit lab, because each grade is weighted by its credit hours. That is why the calculation multiplies grade points by credits before dividing, and why dropping a low grade in a high-credit course changes your GPA the most.

Plus and minus grades

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted uses the plain 4.0 scale. Weighted GPA adds extra points for honors or AP classes, so it can exceed 4.0 where schools use it.

Do pass or fail courses count?

At most schools a pass earns credits but no grade points, so it does not change GPA. Check your school policy.
